Indie Romp
So apparently there is this whole genre of music out there called 'Indie Romp'. According to The Lovely Mrs Davis, there are heaps of bands out there catering for those of us with better taste in music, who would prefer not to be subjected to endless hours of listening to the Wiggles etc. I know this article has been around, but it's worth a read.
They Might Be Giants - Here Come The ABC's is brilliant so now I'm on the hunt for more music in a similar vein, though Persi seems to like jazz and singing on Mondays so maybe it's not going to be too hard a task.

I'm so curious to hear the Devo covers. I love Devo... Dinghy gets to hear the best of Devo. unless he really starts listening to the lyrics, I don't really see why he can't just listen to the originals!
Do you guys remember the SING books from back when we were at school? Well the ABC still does them and they are available from the ABC shops & website. This is what we play for Tash in the car most of the time - until we got off our backsides and edited the clean and appropriately lyriced (is that a word?) songs from our CD collection onto several mix tapes. So Tash now recognises "Shiny happy people" by REM, a fair portion of the Paul Simon early stuff, most TMBG songs and can actually sing the Sun is a mass of incandescant gas (well the syllables are there but she's not quite sure what it all means).
The good thing about the SING CDs is that you can buy the music books as well - thus knowing the words for the in-car disputes and being able to play it on the recorder (dear god!) or piano for fun. They also include a vast range of styles of music and music from different countries. Another of Tash's favourites is the traditional Greek song that you dance to and that speeds up...
And here is the website to get a feel for what I mean... http://www.abc.net.au/learn/sing/
yeah, we used the Sing books every year. I really enjoyed it but then by about 5th grade they decided to schedule choir prac at the same time as the SING lessons. that sucked! as it turned out though, my 5th grade teacher loved singing anf used to bring his own compilations in for us to learn. so we learnt quite a bit of Elton John that year. heh.
weren't the SING lessons on the radio and you tuned in every week? or am I imagining things and they were on cassette?
They used to be on the radio - but these days it's just on CD - but you get the singing cd with all the vocals and an instrumental CD for those who want the class to sing...
